Runners from across the region enjoyed the sunshine as they completed the Stafford half-marathon.

The race – competed by 2,500 runners and 900 fun runners yesterday – was particularly pertinent for former Olympic hurdler Keri Lees, from Stafford.

She, completed the race in memory of her friend Clare Skelton. Clare set the course record in 2003 but died from cancer last year aged 36. The winner of the women's race was presented with the Clare Skelton Trophy for the first time.

First home for the men was Mark Dalkins from Telford AC who finished the 13.1 mile course in just under 71 minutes.

He was followed by Stafford Harriers runner Chris Hollinshead. Third place was taken by Oliver Harradence of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics club.

The winner of the Clare Skelton Trophy – the first female to cross the finish line – was Mandy Vernon from Trentham Running Club.

The 41-year-old was two minutes behind her personal best but still happy.

"I flagged a bit in the middle because of the heat – but am pleased," she said. "I've run the Stafford Half Marathon six times now."
