Hundreds of people are expected to attend a memorial service for retired schoolteacher Betty Yates who was murdered at her secluded cottage in January.

Mrs Yates's family were too upset to hold a large funeral for the much-loved 77-year-old, who taught at St John C of E Middle School, in Kidderminster, and Foley First School, in Streetly.

But they promised a memorial service would be held for people in the community to attend and celebrate Mrs Yates's life.

The service will take place at St Anne's Church, in Load Street, Bewdley, on April 18 at noon.

Rector of Bewdley Keith James said he was expecteing a big turnout, adding: "She was a much-loved and respected member of the community."

A collection will also be held for Kemp Hospice and the International Needs UK charity. People who are unable to attend the service but want to make a donation are asked to visit justgiv ing.com/betty-yates

Mrs Yates was found stabbed at her cottage in Bewdley on January 4. She is believed to have died two days earlier.

Stephen Farrow, aged 47, of no fixed address, has been accused of her murder and has appeared before Bristol Crown Court. His next hearing is on June 29.
