The Friary Outer site will be transformed with more car parking, 60 new homes, and a £4 million hotel and restaurant as part of the £14 million scheme.

All of the legal issues related to the redevelopment have all been ironed out, paving the way for contractors to start work on site in April.

But it will mean disruption for hundreds of drivers as the Friary Outer long stay car park will close from 6pm on March 29 so work can begin, with the loss of 265 parking spaces.

Leader of Lichfield District Council Mike Wilcox said: "We're delighted the contract has gone unconditional so that things can move forward with the redevelopment of this key site."

But he added: "Friary Outer is a popular car park and we know it will be missed while the development takes shape."

Posters have been put up around the car park pointing out others nearby that can be used.
