Detectives were today continuing to question a man who allegedly held his mother hostage at knifepoint during a 28-hour siege in Oldbury.

A 40-year-old man, named locally as Richard Hughes, surrendered himself for arr-est on suspicion of false imp-risonment at around 11.30am yesterday, after allegedly holding his mother, named as Dorothy Hughes, hostage.

Armed police in balaclavas had been on stand-by outside the house in Perry Hill Road. The 79-year-old woman was led away from the house yesterday.

Eyewitnesses described the drama, which first began at 7am on Sunday.

Halesowen College student Tom Williams, aged 19, said he heard officers shouting: "Don't do anything stupid, you know you love your mum. We all want this to end safely and calmly".
