The landmark site of a former iconic car parts factory is being cleared ready for its multi-million pound transformation into a business park.

Up to £4 million is to be invested in the former GKN Driveline site in Aldridge in a move expected to create jobs and allow firms the chance to expand without having to move out of the area. Businesses are currently in talks with the new owners of the site, which is being managed by Birmingham-based Property Link (Midlands).

Sunny Singh, surveyor for the property agency, said: "Clearance works are going on. Redundant pipes are being stripped out and it's being prepared and made ready for refurbishment.

"Then, various jobs will be done such as roofing and work on offices.

"Large companies are taking an interest in the site. It's subject to the site being cleared up and made presentable."

The refurbished site in Middlemore Lane, which is 347,125 sq ft and was once occupied by more than 200 workers, will be for office, warehouse and industrial use.

It is currently made up of a multi-bay industrial facility including production areas, workshops and a single-storey office extension with car parking.

The transformation is expected to happen within the next 12 to 18 months.

Owner of the site, Pal Singh, said: "Despite the economic times we are in, through constant investment and strategic purchases we have experienced tremendous growth across our property portfolio of now up to 10,000 million square feet.

"The former GKN Driveline works based here is a piece of local history and unfortunately the engineering works on this site was a victim of the current economic climate.

"We will be investing a considerable sum of money to refurbish the commercial complex."

Businesses interested in the site can call 0121 200 3377 or visit www.propertylink.co.uk

GKN was in the town for more than 50 years.
