The father of a Staffordshire girl who died in hospital seven years after she was injured as a baby has been charged with her manslaughter, prosecutors have announced.

Paul Slattery, aged 32, is accused of killing Caitlin Wetton, from Cheslyn Hay.

Prosecutors claim Slattery shook his then eight-week-old daughter Caitlin at the family home in November 2002, causing injuries which resulted in her death at Walsall Manor Hospital in June 2010.

Slattery was living with her mother Michelle Wetton at Glenthorne Drive, Cheslyn Hay, when he allegedly carried out the attack.

The couple had a second daughter, Billy-Jo, who was Caitlin's twin, born in September 2002. Caitlin suffered from cerebral palsy.

Senior prosecutor David Rouse said: "The Attorney-General has given his consent to the prosecution of Paul Slattery for the manslaughter of his daughter Caitlin Wetton.

"Following that consent, I have instructed the police to charge Mr Slattery with manslaughter."

Slattery appeared before magistrates in Birmingham yesterday and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on March 13.
