Crosswells Road in Langley was closed between Bloxcidge Street and Dog Kennel Lane after officers were called out last night. The road was expected to remain closed for part of today.
A police car was at the scene today while officers staffed a cordon at the road and also outside a detached house opposite Hotshots snooker club.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Sam Bates said: "Police received reports of a firearm being discharged. No one was injured during the incident."
Shopkeepers said they believed a gunshot had been fired at a house on the road.
Father-of-two Karuna Haran, part owner of Londis News Extra in Dog Kennel Lane, said: "If it's what we think it is, it is very dangerous thing to be happening in the area."
Mr Noen Pratheep, owner of Lifestyle Express, also in Dog Kennel Lane, said: "There were about 15 police cars all with blue flashing lights.
"As soon as they got here they closed off the road. I couldn't see if the officers were armed.
"What we've been told is that someone shot into a house."
