Police investigating a fatal hit-and-run smash in Staffordshire are trying to trace an anonymous caller who gave them a tip-off from a phone box in the West Midlands.

Officers probing the crash between a lorry and moped rider on the A38 near Lichfield today launched an appeal for the mystery caller to get in touch. They believe they could hold crucial clues to the case.

And detectives today revealed they had seized the lorry involved in the smash.

Moped rider Benjamin Warrington, of Agincourt Road, Lichfield, was killed when he was hit by a lorry which did not stop.

A 43-year-old from West Bromwich was arrested and questioned in connection with the crash but has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Warrington, aged 24, was riding his white Yamaha 50cc moped when he was hit at 5.25am on February 21. Anyone with information should call Staffordshire Police on 101.
