Detectives hunting fugitive prisoner John Anslow – suspected of killing a Staffordshire businessman – today revealed they are investigating potential sightings of him in Spain.

And they said they had not ruled out the possibility of sending officers abroad to track down the alleged murderer, after receiving more than 100 calls from members of the public.

Anslow, from Tipton, was sprung from a prison van after it was ambushed by armed men as it travelled to Stafford Crown Court four weeks ago.

Det Supt Wayne Jones, from Staffordshire Police, said they believed Anslow could be in Spain. "We've had calls about potential sightings of Anslow across the UK and abroad," he said.

"We're keeping an open mind about whether he is in this country or abroad and are continuing to liaise with the relevant authorities.

"We haven't sent any detectives abroad, but will review the situation, should any new information come to light."

Police said they were keen to speak to anyone who had seen the grey C63 AMG Estate Mercedes used in the January 23 getaway.

A £10,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to Anslow's arrest and return to prison.

Anslow is accused of killing father-of-two Richard Deakin, from Chasetown. Mr Deakin, who ran a Walsall skip hire firm, was shot in bed in July 2010.

Four other men have also been charged with murder.

The sledgehammer-wielding gang who helped spring Anslow from his prison van used a silver VW Scirocco – registration BT59 NXC – before abandoning it and switching to the Mercedes.

Anyone with information should call police on 01785 232503 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
