Temperatures tonight will drop even lower to -8C (18F). The bitter weather has been sweeping the UK from eastern Europe, where temperatures plummeted to -30C (-22F) this week and up to 150 people have died.

Temperatures in the region plunged to -6C (20F) last night, while today the mercury is unlikely to get above freezing.

Met Office forecaster Michael Lawrence warned: "Cloud will move in tomorrow afternoon and rain will fall as snow across the Midlands. We expect the snow to fall well into the night. Temperatures will be around 1C (34F) during the day."

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings until Sunday for most parts of England, Wales and south-west Scotland, with icy conditions and snow expected.

Sunday will warm up to 5C (41F) but sub-zero temperatures and snow are expected to return by Wednesday.
