A beige VW Beetle cabriolet hit a 19-year-old pedestrian on Penn Road, near the junction with Pinfold Lane, at 11.50am yesterday.

The accident happened at the junction outside the entrance to Penn Hospital, near the Rose and Crown pub.

Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with an emergency doctor on board were sent to the scene.

Police closed the Penn Road, in the direction of Stourbridge, at its junction with Manor Road. The route re-opened at 2.20pm. Claire Thomas, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The pedestrian, a man believed to be 19-years-old, sustained a head injury and suspected internal injuries.

"The man's condition was stabilised by crews and the medic and he was immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic splint.

"A crew transferred the man to the helicopter, which landed nearby, before he was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
