Flames engulfed most of the building, destroying the club's entire camping stock, overnight on Friday.
Thieves broke in through a fire door and escaped with two petrol-powered go-carts, but not before setting the place alight.
The popular group, which has around 100 members, has now been left with a repair bill running into tens of thousands of pounds. Meetings have been cancelled and preparations for the May carnival, which was being organised at the centre, are now also on hold.
Assistant leader Seb Coleman said today: "They set the stores on fire and the flames quickly spread. The ceiling, the walls, the tents, the pots, pans, everything – it has all been destroyed. Everywhere is smokelogged. This will keep us closed for a while."
The building, which is also used for drama, art and music sessions by other groups, has been a regular target for thieves. This was the third break-in in 18 months, with criminals even stealing the security CCTV cameras at one time.
It is yet another blow for the community after the 2078 Boscobel Air Training Corps squadron base at Codsall High School was broken into. The place was vandalised last month and thieves stole all of the band's brass instruments.
Codsall resident John Richards has a nine-year-old son Jack who is a member of the Scouts and a 13-year-old called Ben who attends the ATC. Both my boys have been affected by these awful crimes," he said. "When I broke the news to them, they were really sad."
Staffordshire Police is now investigating. Specialist forensics officers have been trawling the scene for clues. Anyone with information is asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101.
