Students and staff at two Walsall schools are celebrating the opening of their combined academy.

The Mirus Academy was kick-started with a 200-balloon launch yesterday, with each balloon carrying a personal message from students about their dreams for the future.

The academy is the bringing together of Hatherton Primary School and Frank F Harrison Engineering College, forming the first all-through academy in the Black Country, with pupils ranging in age from three to 18.

It is sponsored by Walsall College and is backed by Walsall Council.

Principal of the academy, Jacqui Grace, said: "It is a wonderfully exciting challenge to create a new academy for all ages in our community.

"Through our specialism of creative industries, we offer a dynamic approach to learning, the curriculum and inspire everyone in our community to be part of The Mirus Academy's ambitions."

Jat Sharma, principal and chief executive of Walsall College, said: "We are delighted to be involved in bringing the first all-through academy to the Black Country."

Cabinet member for children's services in Walsall, Councillor Rachel Andrew, added: "The Mirus Academy provides a great opportunity to improve attainment and I'm certain the consistency this exciting new provision will create, will also help raise children's aspirations."

The academy opened to staff for training and preparation on January 3, and pupils started their first day at Mirus on Monday.
