A two-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after he was knocked down by a car.

Jack Pinder was attending a family gathering in Duncombe Street, Wollaston, Stourbridge, when the accident happened in the street outside.

Jack, of Lyttelton Road, Stourbridge, is in a "critical" condition in hospital today.

Police, who are appealing for witnesses, said it appeared that he ran into the road.

A doctor on board the Midlands Air Ambulance anaesthetised the youngster at the scene before he was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The helicopter landed on the road outside the hospital, where doctors were waiting for his arrival.

It happened at about 2.25pm yesterday and involved a car pulling a trailer.

The road – a one-way street – was closed for two and a half hours while police made inquiries at the scene.
