A large-scale fight involving up to 30 people broke out outside a Wolverhampton pub in the early hours of today.

Police were called to Lower Green, outside the Mitre Inn in Tettenhall, at 5.50am amid reports someone was being threatened with a knife.

A police cordon was put in place around a small area of grass opposite the pub after a knife was recovered by officers.

It remained in place until this morning.

Inspector Jen Richards, of Wolverhampton police, said no reports of anyone being injured during the trouble had been received. "There was a suggestion that someone was being threatened with a knife and a knife was recovered," she said.

"No-one has come forward with knife-related injuries and no-one has been reported at hospital either."

A resident of nearby Church Road, who asked not to be named, said today her husband saw violence flare.

She said: "My husband was walking the dog and saw about 30 people fighting. As soon as he saw what was going on, he turned around and came back the other way."

Officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the fight being reported to police. The cordon was removed by 10am.

No-one from the Mitre Inn was available for comment this afternoon.

The Punch Taverns-owned venue reopened in April after it shut in January.

The historic venue, built around 1878, closed amid rumours of financial difficulties after members of staff received text messages warning it was in trouble.

Insp Richards asked witnesses or anyone with information about today's fight to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
