There were tears in his eyes when he saw what they had done to the field where he played football as a boy.

Wolves and England legend Bert Williams officially opened the £18.6m leisure centre named after him that stands close to where he was born, beaming: "I've been extremely lucky in life but this is the icing on the cake. It has been built on the fields that I used to play on as a boy.

"We all had dreams in those days but I never dreamt that one day this fantastic honour would be bestowed on me."

The 91-year-old shook hands and gave autographs to scores of fans who watched him cut the ribbon at the Nettlefolds Way centre on Saturday.

The three floor leisure centre is expected to attract 200,000 visitors a year and includes a 25-metre swimming pool, training pool, squash courts, glass walled sports hall, dance studio and both cardio and youth gym.
