A mother-of-two was today jailed for more than 22 years after admitting killing her 92-year-old grandmother when the pensioner found she had been stealing from her.

Sheila Jones attacked partially blind Daisy Myring with a blue stool at her home in Brownhills on May 31, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The frail pensioner had told her grandson David Worrall she planned to visit the Cheltenham & Gloucester bank after discovering her money was missing.

But Jones, the only one with access to the account, found out about this. It was Jones who had been stealing from her, taking £7,000 in several withdrawals over an eight-month period.

She launched an attack on her grandmother, who was discovered collapsed in the bedroom of her home in Albion Road at 7.10am by her carer Audrey Brown.

The court heard she had been "battered", suffering five injuries to the head and numerous cuts and bruises. She died in hospital.

Police launched a murder probe and Daisy's relatives appeared at an emotional press conference appealing for the killer to come forward. The Express & Star also featured pictures of police divers searching a pool near Jones' home.

Days later Jones was spotted by two officers as she walked down Betty's Lane, Norton Canes, carrying two black bin bags – which contained the murder weapon and a bloodied pillowcase.

Police believe she was panicked by the photographs. Jones, 36, of Brownhills Road, Norton Canes admitted murder today.

She was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum tariff of 22 years.

Judge Philip Parker QC said:?"The aggravating features in this case are plain. You went there to kill her. It was motivated by your desire to silence her and in an attempt to stop any investigation into the fact that you were stealing from her. Your crime was cold blooded and premeditated."
