Veteran Black Country entertainer Tommy Mundon has had his name immortalised in granite as part of a new "comedy carpet" in front of Blackpool Tower.

The 77-year-old comedian said he was "gobsmacked" at the news.

And he is in side-splittingly good company with more than 1,000 comedians from the last 100 years – from Mae West to Matt Lucas.

The Black Country star, who is still performing despite battling against Parkinson's Disease, only knew he featured on the 2,200 square metre piece of art when a friend returned from Blackpool and told him they had seen his name on it.

And he doesn't mind at all that millions of people are likely to walk all over him in future decades, or even centuries, as his name features alongside his comedy heroes Ken Dodd and Frankie Howerd, as well as Spike Milligan, Peter Cook and Morecambe and Wise.

On his own particular "slab" of the incredible work of art, close to a "Monty Python" section, are comedians near to him alphabetically, including Frank Muir, Al Murray and Neil Morrissey. "It's bostin' news and I'm gobsmacked and really chuffed that people are now walking all over me," said Tommy, who lives with his wife, Val, in Alexandra Road, Halesowen.
