A man and his three-year-old nephew were flown to hospital with serious injuries after they were knocked down by a car on a zebra crossing in Cannock town centre.

The pair, both from Cannock, were stable in hospital today following the crash outside Asda in Avon Road.

A blue Citroen Xantia travelling out of Cannock was in collision with the 41-year-old man and the boy, who were on a pedestrian crossing.

Two air ambulances flew to the scene to airlift the pair. The uncle was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the boy to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Avon Road was closed for two hours following the smash, at 3pm yesterday, causing jams to build up around the town centre.
