Would-be thieves equipped with a seven-ton truck tried to steal £600,000 of diesel from a South Staffordshire quarry - but were rumbled by a security guard on patrol.

The guard foiled the attempted theft at the Tarmac quarry in Seisdon when he spotted the padlock broken on the gates during his evening patrol.

The raiders, who were after a fuel haul of 8,000 litres, fled after being disturbed and a police helicopter was dispatched to the skies.

The Walsall Securitas Mobile security guard discovered the raid just after 10pm on Tuesday.

Detectives today appealed for anyone with information about the attempted raid to come forward as the hunt for the criminals continued.
