Raiders armed with railway sleepers smashed their way into a Tettenhall boutique and fled with £14,000 of designer clothes and jewellery. Expensive coats, handbags and cardigans were among items swiped from the La Pinza store.

The early hours break-in has devastated the managers of the shop Gail Round and Vernon Hubbard, who say that the future of the business has now been left hanging in the balance. "We only sold one thing yesterday," said Mr Hubbard. "The trouble is, everything we have in is winter stock and the manufacturers are now making spring clothing.

"The weather is starting to turn cold so nobody wants to buy that sort of clothing yet. It's going to be touch and go whether we survive until Christmas."

The burglars used railway sleepers as a makeshift battering ram to smash their way through the front door of the High Street store at about 3am on Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0345 113 5000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
