The first phase of an £800,000 scheme which will improve 11 primary schools across Walsall is being rolled out.

Projects include roof work, new windows, drainage replacement and a mobile classroom.

They are being funded from the £4.7 million capital maintenance allowance for 2011/12. Roofing work has started at Woodlands Primary in Willenhall, while contractors have begun working on electrical rewiring at St Bernadette's Catholic Primary in Brownhills.

Work on all schools is expected to be completed before the end of the Easter holidays in April next year. Woodlands Primary is one of eight schools benefitting from a share of £616,000.

Other schools, where work is being tendered, include Busill Jones Primary in Bloxwich, Pinfold Street JMI in Darlaston, Butts Primary, Harden Primary, New Invention Infants and Junior and Rushall JMI.

St Bernadette's Catholic Primary is one of the other three schools benefitting from work totalling £210,104.
