Plans to relieve overcrowding on the main rail line linking the West Midlands with London were announced today.

Three new 600-seat "tilting" Pendolino trains will next summer be added to the West Coast line run by Virgin Trains.

Also, 31 of the existing Pendolino trains will be lengthened from nine to 11 carriages, increasing the number of standard-class seats on each train by almost 50 per cent, from 320 to 470.

In all, 106 new carriages are being introduced daily on the route, making 28,000 extra seats available.
