A busy main road through South Staffordshire was shut today following a diesel spillage from a tanker carrying an estimated 1,000 litres of fuel.

The A458 Bridgnorth Road in Enville, between Morfe Lane and Kinver Road, was closed following the spillage last night and diversions put in place.

The road was expected to reopen at 5pm today as highways workers cleared up the scene.

Staffordshire Police spokeswoman Jane Hoult said the police were called shortly after 5pm yesterday, along with fire crews and engineers from the council's highways department.

She said firefighters managed to plug the spill and the road would re-open later today. She added: "Diversions are in place and highways engineers are now dealing with the incident."
