Pay-by-phone parking is already being introduced on Walsall town centre car parks to save drivers searching for cash to put in ticket machines.
The system is due to come into force in the coming months but council chiefs are now also looking at extending it to street parking bays. It follows the introduction of controversial on-street fees earlier this year.
Paying to park by phone has been successful in other parts of the country, such as London and Birmingham city centre.
The approach has seen drivers call an automated service to register their details or text a number to give information about their car and how long they are staying. Parking attendants then check who has paid through hand-held units.
