Former West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes has undergone life-saving brain surgery after suffering an attack of the bends, it has emerged.
The 35-year-old was taken ill after going scuba diving on his honeymoon in Mauritius this summer. The condition is caused by divers resurfacing too quickly.
Hughes, who also played for Kidderminster Harriers, was rushed to hospital on his return to Britain. He has recovered well.
