The £6.3 million modernisation of a Staffordshire leisure centre is on target for a July 2012 finish with the completion of the new fitness suite.

The roof this week went on the first-floor extension that will house the new gym at Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock, leaving the way clear to start on other projects at the site. Although both swimming pools are closed for the full 15-month duration of the work, the refurbishment is being phased so that the sports hall and current fitness suite stay open.

The new 150-station fitness centre, which includes dedicated changing facilities, is expected to be available to the public by early next year.

The contractors, GF Tomlinson's Ltd, moved on to the site on April 26. The centre was completely closed for two days in June while the new main roof was put into place.

The full scheme also includes a 200-seat spectator gallery above the swimming pool, a modern changing village with individual changing facilities, a dance studio, a changed aspect from the outside with a new curved roof and replaced and upgraded mechanical and electrical services.
