A busy road in Pelsall was closed today after a sewer collapsed and a hole opened up over a six-foot wide chasm beneath the surface.

Norton Road is said to be in "imminent danger of further collapse".

Council engineers immediately cordoned off the road last night but some drivers ignored the restrictions.

Councillor Tom Ansell, the borough's transport chief said "some idiots" had been moving the bollards to drive along the road, putting their lives in danger.

Norton Road resident Frederick Coop, 71, said: We saw drivers breaking through the closure. This is a very busy road, especially in rush hour."
