A woman was injured when her car flipped onto its roof on a busy dual carriageway in South Staffordshire today.

The Fiat Punto heading towards Stafford overturned on the A449 in Coven, near the 3 Hammers golf club, at around 8.40am.

The driver was freed from the wreckage by firefighters. She was treated by paramedics before being taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. Her injuries were not thought to be serious.

The Midlands Air Ambulance was scrambled from Cosford but was not needed. Fire crews from Brewood, Penkridge, Stafford and Fallings Park attended.

Drivers mounted kerbs on the left and right of the dual carriageway to clear a path for the emergency services to get to the scene. A section of the A449 towards Stafford was closed, causing lengthy queues to build up as rush-hour commuters were caught up in the disruption.

Some motorists got out of their cars and waited on the central reservation while the emergency services dealt with the crash.

The road was eventually reopened by police just before 10am.
