Row over cycle lane comes round again

A controversial cycle lane created around a busy Black Country traffic island is putting both bike users and drivers at risk, it was claimed today as calls were renewed for its removal.
Markings were put in place around the island in Shell Corner, Halesowen, earlier this year by Dudley Council to make it easier for cyclists to get around.
But Stourbridge Bicycle Users' Group, better known as Stourbug, says it has had the reverse effect as the lane takes bikes closer to the path of cars as they are leaving the roundabout.
Drivers may also not see them straight away as they go around the island, creating a further risk of an accident taking place, according to the group. Stourbug chairman Russell Eden said members had called for the lane to be removed before but so far nothing had happened.
He said the matter would now be taken up with new Dudley Council transport boss Councillor Patrick Harley.
