Detectives were today hunting raiders who struck as a security van was making a cash delivery to a bank in Staffordshire.

Witnesses reported seeing a masked man with a large knife ambushing a guard taking cash to the Barclays branch in Clay Street, Penkridge, just before noon yesterday.

It is understood that around £25,000 was stolen from the Group 4 Securicor van. A cash box was also left behind in Crown Bridge, which was taped off by forensic officers.

The robber fled with a bag containing cash and Det Sgt Dan Ison of Staffordshire Police said he believed the thief had an accomplice who was driving a maroon Vauxhall Cavalier.

The two men were said to have sped off in the direction of St Michael's Square, potentially heading towards the A5 in the Wolverhampton direction.

The masked offender is described as white, 5ft 10in to 6ft, and stocky. His clothing included a black ski mask and black gloves
