Residents were evacuated and bomb disposal experts called in following the discovery of a Second World War shell.
Taylor Wimpey construction workers found the shell that later turned out to be harmless, in Oldbury yesterday. They were using a mechanical digger on the site on the corner of Seymour Road and Rood End Road, at noon.
They called police who evacuated the site and some neighbouring houses. Other streets were cordoned off but residents were allowed to stay inside. Rood End Road,
Beresford Road and Seymour Road were also closed. The bomb disposal team discovered the shell was inactive and not dangerous and the roads were reopened at 3.35pm.
Chief Superintendent Mark Robinson, commander for Sandwell Police, said: "Thankfully this alert was brought to safe and swift conclusion, meaning roads were able to re-open in time for the evening rush hour.
"We understand that the closures may have caused some disruption, however ensuring the safety of all people in the vicinity is always our primary concern."
