Metal thieves have ripped lead from 17 homes in a South Staffordshire village in just one weekend, it was revealed today.

Canopies above windows and doors have been stripped from houses in Bilbrook.

Thieves are thought to be cashing in on soaring scrap prices.

Emergency repair work was today under way at the homes on Orchard Lane and neighbouring Cherry Trees Lane, as some residents revealed they had taken down remaining lead to stop the thieves returning.

Police are investigating.
