One of Wolverhampton's busiest roads was closed in one direction after a rush hour head-on car crash.

Three people were taken to New Cross Hospital following the smash on Penn Road between a blue Audi and a red VW Tiguan

The accident happened at around 5.45pm yesterday near to the junction of Manor Road. It is believed the cars collided as one turned off Penn Road.

The crash saw one lane of the dual carriageway towards Penn closed for more than an hour, causing delays for drivers, while police investigated.

Motorists were diverted around the scene while the cars were recovered.

Two crews from Wolverhampton fire station were called to the scene amid reports of one person trapped in a car.

But a spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "Three casualties were taken to hospital for a check-up by paramedics."

Their injuries were not believed to be serious.
