As the recession bites, an ever-increasing number of people are shunning the supermarkets in favour of growing and selling their own produce.

Thousands of people flock to South and Stubbs Auctioneers in Penkridge every week to bid for chickens, eggs and vegetables.

The craze has reached such a point that Dudley man Bob Smith has decided to launch a similar poultry auction in Bridgnorth, restarting a 150-year tradition that died out during the foot and mouth scare several years ago.

The auctions were being launched today at 11am and will be held every week at Nockdeighton Agricultural and Livestock Auction Centre in Tasley, Bridgnorth.
