The 34-year-old was found badly beaten in the early hours of April 3 in Duke Street, Wednesfield, near Pinfold Gardens.
Police in Wolverhampton have now released CCTV images of three men and two women they want to speak to, who are all being treated as suspects.
Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested in connection with the attack and bailed pending further inquiries.
Detectives were planning to return to the scene of the attack later today in attempt to identify potential witnesses. They will be handing out leaflets featuring the photos of the five suspects.
Det Con Jim Connell, from Force CID, said today: "The identities of the three men and two women in these CCTV images are crucial to this investigation.
"I would urge anyone who has any information about who these people are, or indeed anyone who may have witnessed the incident, to contact us as soon as possible."
The victim was found lying face down in the street where he had been kicked and punched and suffered serious head injuries.
He was taken to New Cross Hospital and is now said to be recovering at home.
A second man, aged 37, and also from the local area, was found at the scene with minor injuries.
Police believe the attack happened after the men were dropped off by a taxi.
Anyone with information about the attack or who knows the identify of any of the people pictured should contact Dc Connell at Force CID on 0345 113 5000.
