With its 12 bedrooms, six bathrooms, swimming pool, tennis court and wooded garden, it is out of reach of all but the wealthiest buyers.

It has 360 acres of freehold land surrounding it, including 96 acres of Shropshire woodland and a further 509 acres for sports.

Owners Simon and Mary Kenyon-Slaney today told the Express & Star of their love for the property they have lived in for 42 years and their sadness at leaving as they downsize.

The Kenyon-Slaneys now hope a young family will give the home a new lease of life by developing it and exploiting it in the same way that they did.

Mr Kenyon-Slaney, aged 79, said: "It's the end of a long chapter for us and, hopefully, the beginning of a good one for somebody else."

The spectacular interior is decorated with ornate plaster cornicing, silk wall coverings and marble fireplaces.

Outside there are beautifully-kept gardens and a woodland walk featuring daffodils and bluebells.

* Offers above £6 million will be considered. The couple has already received a number of expressions of interest through estate agency Savills.
