A pensioner was killed after being knocked down by a car in Great Barr today in one of a number of crashes in and around Walsall.

The 88-year-old man became trapped underneath a car in Ferndale Avenue at 8.15am.

Firefighters used airbags to lift the vehicle but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, a Vauxhall Corsa hit the side of Hollands Bridge in Livingstone Road, Goscote, just before 6.15am. The 33-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries and no damage was caused to the bridge.

Police were also called to a collision between a Renault Megane, Mitsubishi Shogun, Sukida motorcycle and Renault van in Bosty Lane, Aldridge, just before 7.30am. No-one was badly injuries.

In Pelsall Road, Brownhills, a 30-year-old motorcyclist slipped on black ice at 7.30am and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Hold-ups were also caused after a Peugeot 206 and Vauxhall Corsa collided on the busy Keyway at 8.30am.

Elsewhere, a Walsall woman wase cut free from the wreckage of her car after a head-on crash in Little Wyrley, near Norton Canes.

The accident involving a Ford Fusion and Subaru Legacy happened in Gorsey Lane at 7.20am.

The 33-year-old woman suffered severe cuts to her head and was knocked unconscious. She was flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
