A pet dog was found wandering in wasteland in South Staffordshire in an "appalling" condition and had to be destroyed.
The RSPCA today launched an appeal for information to bring the owners of the elderly shih tzu to justice for neglect.
The dog was found off East Road, Featherstone, behind Brinsford Young Offenders Institution by a member of the public.
It was taken to Sunnyside Kennels in Coven where, despite efforts to save it, had to be destroyed.
RSPCA inspector Jackie Hickman said today the dog was underweight and had a matted coat as well as an infection.
Its claws were overgrown and one was curled into the pad of his foot.
The dog, believed to be aged 10-12, also had cataracts and rotten infected teeth.
Vets say he did not respond to treatment and was not eating following his discovery on January 5.
Now the RSPCA is hoping someone can trace the owners responsible for the animal's suffering.
Karen Doy, manager of Sunnyside Kennels in Dark Lane, said: "We have dogs come in to us in terrible conditions but this poor little dog was in an appalling state.
"I would urge anyone who knows or recognises the dog to make contact."
