Motorists faced a 10-mile traffic jam nightmare when a lorry shed its load of concrete and brought parts of the M6 to a standstill.

Drivers were stuck for two hours as the southbound queue stretched back from the scene of the accident, near the RAC control centre at Junction 8, to Junction 12 at Gailey.

It closed two lanes and triggered a knock-on effect at the M5 interchange, with traffic building up to Junction 2 at Oldbury.

The Black Country Route ground to a halt, while there were also delays on the A41 Birmingham Road near Junction 1 of the M5 at West Bromwich, and congestion along Wolverhampton Road, Walsall.

The concrete load was shed at 2.30pm yesterday. Specialist recovery teams cleared the scene.

In another accident, a driver was taken to hospital after two lorries collided near Cannock on the southbound M6 carriageway between Junctions 12 and 11 at 5pm during the tailbacks.

Another lorry shed its load at the The Keyway roundabout at 4.15pm.
