A driver died instantly after being hit by passing traffic when she climbed from her car onto the hard shoulder following a crash on a Midland motorway.

The woman is understood to have been hit by both a car and a lorry near the spot where she lost control and careered off the M54 at Wolverhampton.

The victim's red saloon car ended up on its side after ploughing into bushes alongside the hard shoulder of the westbound carriageway between Junction 2 for Stafford Road and 3 for Albrighton at 7am yesterday.

She managed to get out of the damaged car in the dark and is thought to have walked onto the hard shoulder before being hit.

Ambulance, police and fire crews rushed to the scene, near a pedestrian foot bridge off Pendeford Hall Lane, Pendeford, but nothing could be done to save her.

The drivers of the other car and lorry were treated for shock at the scene.

The westbound carriageway was closed for seven hours while police accident investigators combed the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill said: "The woman was confirmed dead at the scene. The driver of another car and a lorry were treated for shock but did not need to go to hospital."

Witnesses are asked to contact Central Motorway Police on 0121 626 1285.
