Former Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray is helping pupils of a fire-ravaged primary school enjoy reading again after collecting dozens of books to replace those destroyed in the blaze.

The kind-hearted star was touched by the plight of Wilkinson Primary School pupils after being invited along to a charity Halloween party held for them, which he attended with current goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

The library at the school in Walter Road, Bilston, was destroyed by arsonists in October, along with the rest of the building.

All 335 pupils are now in temporary classrooms at nearby St Martin's Church. An appeal was launched for books to replace those destroyed in the fire and more than 1,000 have been collected so far including fiction and non-fiction books, including dictionaries and thesauruses

Matt is now preparing to hand over boxes of books he has collected himself.

He said: "It's nice just to play even a small part in helping them get the school back up and running. Collecting a few old books isn't difficult, but it can make a real difference to them."
