A city centre pub in Wolverhampton was sealed off today after a 47-year man was found lying unconscious outside the building with a serious head injury.

The victim was found lying on the ground outside the Tap & Spile pub in Princess Street last night and was taken to New Cross Hospital.

Officers were called to the pub at 8.50pm and the man, believed to be from Castlecroft, was treated by paramedics for cuts to his head.

Police are treating the incident as a suspected assault.

Shocked commuters were greeted with the sight of the cordoned-off pub this morning as they came into work.

Jas Dhillon, aged 49, who owns Home Kitchen on Princess Street, said: "It's quite frightening that it's so close to home."

Witnesses should call 0345 113 5000.
