A busy section of Wolverhampton's city centre ring road reopened today after long-awaited resurfacing work was completed.

The jam-busting work, twice cancelled because of poor weather, has allowed a new lane to open leading to Penn Road.

It was the first phase of a £1.2 million project to widen the outside lane of the A449 where it meets Ring Road St John's in Snow Hill.

New traffic lights have also been installed on the junction as part of the work, which started in March.

Wolverhampton City Council's head of transportation David Orton said today: "Although the resurfacing work was completed at the weekend, we had to wait until the new road markings were laid down before we could open up the new lanes to traffic. That was successfully completed last night and the entire junction is now in use."

The lane widening is part of a wider £5m project to transform the island.
