A Oldbury mother was in a critical condition today after and out-of-control car ploughed into her home as she cooked dinner for her family.

Her three daughters were also left with cuts and bruises after the BMW M5 slammed into the house, reducing part of it to rubble due to the devastating impact.

Shocked neighbours in Fisher Road ran to the family's rescue. The mother was trapped under piles of rubble and a cooker in the kitchen and they had to free her amid plumes of smoke and jets of water.

The woman, aged 41, suffered serious head injuries and had to be airlifted to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Her three daughters aged seven, nine and 12 were not in the kitchen but had to be taken to Sandwell General Hospital with cuts and bruises. A fourth child who was in the house did not need hospital treatment but was badly shaken.

The car hurtled into the front of the house shortly before 4.30pm yesterday.

The driver of the black car, a man aged 31 from Warley, was taken to Sandwell General Hospital with a broken neck. Police said today he had been detained in hospital on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Afterwards, the front of the house resembled little more than a shell and debris, including a fridge, TV and kitchen cabinets, was piled up in the front garden.

Fisher Road resident and father-of-10 Martin Pace came to the family's rescue. The 50-year-old said: "All you could see was smoke and the kids were screaming 'where's my mum' over and over again. They were hysterical.

"We couldn't see the mother at first but we eventually found her underneath piles of rubble in the kitchen. She was underneath the cooker too and there was water everywhere.

"We just started moving all the stuff off her as fast as we could.

Brig Ford, spokesman for West Midlands Police, said: "We know that at the time of the collision there was another car just in front of the BMW and we are keen to talk to the driver of this vehicle as a potential witness.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact the traffic collision investigation unit on 0345 1135000."
