Budget clothing giant Primark today confirmed it will open a new superstore in Walsall in a deal that could be signed within weeks.
Bosses revealed negotiations with council chiefs were progressing well and the contract could be signed as soon as two weeks' time.
It was originally believed Primark would take over 50,000 sq ft of the existing town centre Tesco in Bridge Street when the supermarket moves to a new site next year.
But it is now believed to be looking at an alternative location in the town centre.
Councillor Adrian Andrew said it was too soon to reveal the new location but said Primark would play an integral part of the £21 million revamp of the Old Square shopping centre and wider regeneration of the town centre.
"We are delighted Primark has confirmed it is coming to Walsall," he said. "It will be a major boost for the town centre and will be great for new local jobs, the economy and shoppers."
Primark spokesman Geoff Lancaster said a deal was expected to be struck within the next two to three weeks.
He said: "We are interested and negotiations are proceeding but nothing is yet signed."
A total of 5,000 people have joined an online campaign to bring Primark to the town.
