A road was closed for several hours after a lorry collided with a railway bridge, ripping a large chunk out of the vehicle's trailer.

The accident happened on the Old Hednesford Road in Cannock, close to the junction with Eastern Way. The HGV driver was unhurt.

The road was closed and diversions were set up from around 10pm on Friday until 8am on Saturday.

Driver Robert Sweeney, who took this picture of the damaged HGV, was driving along Winchester Road at about 1am and came upon the scene.

Mr Sweeney, who lives in William Morris Grove, was forced to drive down Crab Lane and Cannock Road to get through towards the town centre. The 43-year-old said: "I was just coming from the garage having filled up with fuel but could see clearly the road was closed off.

"The bump had ripped a bit out of the trailer. There was a lot of commotion going on and the fire service were there.

"It just stopped all vehicles from driving through. The driver was fine though."

Meanwhile, fire crews from Stafford were called at 10.30am on Saturday to the Dog and Doublet in Sandon after an HGV vehicle hit a power line in the car park and temporarily cut supplies.

Power was restored by midday.
