The clean-up crew was drafted in by the council to erase the bright pink paint sprayed across the cenotaph and nearby wall overnight on Tuesday last week.
The work over the weekend is believed to have cost the council approximately £600 as a specialist cleaning method was needed in order to protect the delicate sandstone.
Veterans from the city's Burma Star Association who saw the graffiti on Thursday after attending a reception with city mayor Councillor Malcolm Gwinnett were moved to tears by the actions of the vandals.
The graffiti included the words "I love Luke x" and "Spar's" as well as an obscene image visible to any passers-by in St Peter's Square.
A 15-year-old schoolgirl has been arrested in connection with the vandal attack on Friday night. She has been released on police bail.
