Dwarfing the other buildings in the vicinity, the latest Tesco superstore dominates the skyline and is just months away from opening.

The supermarket firm which this week unveiled a 14.1 per cent rise in half-year profits to £1.8 billion, is building the store in Walsall town centre.

The 10,880sq metre store, with 750 car parking spaces and offices, is going up on the site of the old St Paul's campus of Walsall College.

Up to 200 jobs are to be created as work enters the final two months ahead of a proposed opening on December 6.

The rooftop car park can already be seen with construction of access roads to the site now well under way and expected to be finished by November.

Part of a new layout has been completed in nearby Hatherton Road with a contra flow bus lane created to help future shoppers.

It is part of a land swap agreement as part of an initiative between Tesco, Walsall College and Walsall Council.

The Wisemore college campus opened just over a year ago. Tesco is looking to expand across the region with a new store planned for the Burnt Tree island in Dudley, which will double the size of the existing supermarket.

The project, which will take around 12 months to complete, is due to start next year.
