A man was impaled on a wooden pole after falling from a platform at a clay factory.

The 35-year-old suffered groin and stomach injuries in the 4ft fall at Potter's Clay and Coal in Pelsall Road, Brownhills.

Firefighters were called to the factory to cut the pole at 3.45pm yesterday.

The man, from West Bromwich, was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray McGregor said: "It seems he has been working on a platform 4ft off the ground.

"He has fallen, we don't know how, and he has been impaled in his right groin."
